Christina Foitou develops a painting practice in which movement, memory, and writing converge.
Her new series emerges from gesture and the traces left by the body. Dance and movement form the starting point of her work: through small performances with dancers in her studio, as well as through dance videos when she is not working directly with a dancer, she observes and captures the body in motion.
Movement thus becomes the starting point of a pictorial process in which forms, fragments and presences gradually emerge. Drawing, charcoal, pastel and paint overlap, shift and disappear, allowing the image to take shape between appearance and disappearance.
"Writing moves across the surface of the painting and is transformed into matter, rhythm, and gesture."
Handwriting occupies an essential place in this work. The texts are her own, personal writings and poetry, and are inscribed onto the painted surface using the Byzantine alphabet, which itself becomes an additional visual element within the work.
Between presence and disappearance, gesture and language, Christina Foitou seeks less to tell a story than to allow what remains to emerge: the trace of a movement, an emotion, a memory.
